A Lyon Friendly for the Portland Timbers?

By: Bob Kellett | June 16th, 2008

Dave Knows has used his nose to sniff out a potential friendly between Olympique Lyonnais (Lyon to us language-challenged folks) and the Portland Timbers. I did a little bit more digging and babelfishing to come up with this nearly intelligible blurb:

L’ Olympic Lyonese could follow a camp d’ drive in the United States during the second fortnight of July, indicated to Monday the president of l’ OL, Jean-Michel Aulas. Portland cement sites (north-western), seat of the mark d’ sports equipment, Nike, future equipment supplier of the club increases sevenfold champion of France, after having repurchased Umbro, and that of Salt Lake City (western) were retained. Two matches friendly could also be disputed during this stay of which l’ organization is with still to finalize. Lately, Jean-Michel Aulas had wished to dispute the Trophy of the Champions, against Bordeaux, in Chicago (north-eastern), but the Professional football league n’ continuation did not give.

If this turns out to be true, this will be the biggest international exhibition in the modern era of the Timbers. Lyon have won the French Ligue 1 title seven years in a row and are consistently one of the top teams in continental Europe. Hell, I’d even consider canceling my honeymoon to attend this one. I just hope it doesn’t turn out to be a situation where they train out at Nike and then play elsewhere.

Stay tuned…

This would mean that the Timbers have a better opponent than the MLS All-Stars…

I really hope this happens. I’d love to see Lyon in the US no matter where they play, even though Portland is about as far away from Boston as you could get in the continental US. But I love my team and would stalk them to China if I had the money.

If this happens and Lyon come to Portland, I’ll be the crazy girl holding up the “JUNI: CAN I HAVE YOU BABIES?” poster.

I’ll understand if you guys pretend you don’t know who I am.

i’d like to see this happen, but OL already does the peace cup in korea every year, have just set up an academy in dubaï, and one can only stretch oneself so thin.

i think an even better idea would be for our WOMEN’S team to tour the states. they’re one of the best in the world, the US is like mecca for ladies’ football, and a trip like that would be a nice reward for them. they would give the USWNT a match to remember, in front of the biggest crowd they ever saw, and probably sell some jerseys too!

Guignol, the peace cup is every two years, isn’t it? Lyon did it last year, so the next one will be in 2009 in Spain.

If they do come, I’m guessing it would be without any of their players participating in the Euros, who’ll be vacationing before the season.

    If so, that’s too bad.

I think the French all-stars just got a slightly longer vacation than they’d reckoned, Nick. The likes of Benzema may in fact be available by the end of July. (Assuming a July 26 friendly date)
