Portland Timbers to Face Juventus Primavera on June 14
By: Bob Kellett | April 15th, 2008
I was just cruising by the Portland-Bologna Sister City site, as is my habit, and I noticed this little blurb in their calendar section:
June 14, Saturday at 7:00 pm . Timbers vs. Juventus Primavera Soccer Game. The PBSCA will be selling a block of tickets so that PBSCA amici can enjoy the game together. Details will be posted.
Actually, I give credit to our man Wise for unearthing this exhibition on Talk Timbers. This is the second year in a row the Portland Timbers will face a team of Italian youth. In fact, Andrew Gregor’s testicles are just now recovering from their meeting with the hand of an AC Milan youngster last year.
Juventus is, of course, a storied club in the world of football. Storied and troubled in a Serie A kind of way. They have a big following and I am sure their kids will draw a decent crowd to PGE Park even if that crowd includes people like me who can’t stand Juve. Love them or hate them, what else are you going to be doing on June 14 anyway? Reading the Portland-Bologna Sister City website?

The AC Milan game last year was a lot of fun. I was impressed with the intensity and loved seeing Italian flags in the stands. I hope Juventus brings a good team.

I was going to make a joke about bologna samwiches; then I read the phrase “Andrew Gregor’s testicles” and lost my appetite. I’m glad they’re scheduling big European “names” but underwhelmed by another youth team. I would much rather see a 1st team from Central or South America (if we can get English, Italian and Mexican sides, why not a team from Argentina, Bolivia or Brazil?).

Great news! I was at the AC Milan game last year and really enjoyed it. I hope that some other international teams come to Portland this summer. I’d love to see a Championship, Premiership-to-be team here (and of course any team from the Premiership, SPL, Serie A, La Liga, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Eredivisie, etc.)
