Portland Timbers to Play Monarcas Morelia July 3
By: Bob Kellett | June 2nd, 2008Those pesky message board rumors turned out to be correct. The Portland Timbers have announced that they will face Mexican club Monarcas Morelia in a friendly on July 3 at PGE Park. The official pronouncement is that this is one of the best teams in Mexico. Perhaps. The club has won one top flight championship in its 70 years of existence and that was back in 2000. It is coming off a Clausura season in which it finished last in its group and 14th overall with five wins, three draws and nine losses. Like the Timbers recently, they struggled to find the net, scoring just 11 goals in 17 games. The video above is from their recent game against Tigres.
None of this really matters, of course. It is another game on the schedule, a game that is taking place on a Thursday evening before a holiday weekend, and another opportunity for the Timbers to do some outreach to the Spanish-speaking community. And it will give Tom Taylor a chance to play. All of those are good things. You’ll recall that last year a watered down version of the Timbers defeated a watered down version of Club Necaxa in front of 7,761 at PGE Park.
