Preseason Friendly: University of Portland 1-1 Portland Timbers
By: Bob Kellett | April 12th, 2008
The Portland Timbers wrapped up their 2008 preseason campaign with a 1-1 draw against the University of Portland at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. Defender Cameron Knowles scored in the 49th minute to give the USL First Division team the lead. Playing a man down after a red card was shown to Shaun Higgins, the Timbers gave up a goal in the 88th minute to the Pilots Logan Emory. A physical contest, the game featured five yellow cards and a red card, and in the end it saw Timbers keeper Ray Burse being helped to the dressing room after a late tackle involving a Pilots player.

Final Thoughts
Since I was home with Ebola, I don’t have too much insight to offer about the game other than to say that the picture of Ray Burse being helped off the pitch made me throw up in my mouth. That is exactly what you hope doesn’t happen less than a week before the season starts. Hopefully it isn’t anything too serious. He’s scheduled to return to FC Dallas today to sit on the bench for their game tonight.
I also happen to think it does neither side any good to have a team play a man down in an exhibition (I’m assuming the Timbers played a man down, correct me if I am wrong). Too bad this one appeared to get out of control.
Your thoughts on what you saw?

It was a physical match, but a good test for our boys before the start of the season. Too bad about Burse, no official word yet, but I doubt he made the trip back for the Dallas match. He couldn’t put weight on his leg when he tried to get off the pitch. I just don’t know what took so long for the ref to call the match. Seemed like we played 5 minutes of extra time, then waited another 2-3 minutes during the Burse injury. Poor job officiating.

Yes the Timbers played with 10 men after Higgins’ ridiculous red card (the Pilots player flopped like a pro, give him that). I also thought they should have allowed us to sub in a replacement (as happened in the game vs Whitecaps earlier in preseason). But the ref was an absolute joke and no mistake, he had zero control over the game and it made for some laughable shit.

Also to be fair, Emory’s goal was a sweet blast (after a very weak clearance by a Timbers defender, can’t remember which).

Gavin actually elected not to put a replacement player in. He wanted to play with 10 men – at some point this season Gregor or Potl or Knowles are going to get a red card or three and they are going to need to know how to play with 10 guys.
The Burse play was a hospital ball back pass from Scot that led to a 50-50 collison. Stupid in the 94th minute.
