Match 19: Charleston Battery 2-0 Portland Timbers
By: Bob Kellett | July 20th, 2008
After a weekend in which the Timbers played two games and forced their opposition into exactly two saves (two saves in 180 minutes!), I am too depressed to even write about this one. I’ll let the others fill in the ugly details.
“We were very solid defensively,” said Battery coach Mike Anhauser. “They were lumping it into the box and trying to cause us problems, but other than a couple free kicks and corners, they didn’t have too much to put us under pressure.”

Despite the goals, much of the first half was marked by some ill-tempered exchanges and sloppy play.

Charleston registered 10 of their 14 shots on the night in the second half forcing Knighton into action and made diving stops on shots by midfielder Osvaldo Alonso and Armstrong early in the second half.

The Timbers would also see Shaun Higgins, Takayuki Suzuki, and Justin Thompson all see yellow which could have them out for the Carolina match on Thursday on yellow-card accumulation.

I have a question for you, Bob, and I’d like your honest opinion:
So what if we suck?

I’d be happy with mere sucking. I’m afraid this year’s team doesn’t even do that word justice.

Gavin is making Chris Agnello look like Gus Hiddink.
We suck. So what.

I am a former from the Portland team that coach Agnello coached that year and I have no doubt that if you knew what really went on that season you would not make that statement.
Coach Agnello is a good guy and an excellent coach. It is unfortunate that he had to endure his assistant coaches stabbing him in the back as well as a front office that did even worse to him that that.
This is in no way to say he did not make some mistakes while there but as an insider I can guarantee it was nowhere near his fault.
