US Open Cup: Portland Timbers 2-3 Hollywood United

By: Bob Kellett | June 10th, 2008

A Hollywood Fairy Tale Ending or A Hollywood Horror Show. You pick the headline. Hollywood United, an amateur team that plays in the Coast Soccer League, knocked off the USL First Division Portland Timbers 3-2 in the first round of the US Open Cup in front of 3,089 at PGE Park. A stunning and crazy game it was. You can catch the replay, and if you haven’t seen it you should watch it even if you know the score, on USL Live. I’m exhausted from my color commentary duties so you’ll have to watch the broadcast to catch my thoughts or wait until Wednesday when my fingers and brain are back in action. Until then, a few questions I’d love for you to answer for me:

1. If Chris Brown was the most effective player on the Timbers in the first half and he isn’t injured, why was he yanked at halftime of a 1-1 game?

2. How does a former World Cup player like Takayuki Suzuki get stoned on a penalty kick that would have put his team up by two goals?

3. When did Matt Taylor learn how to play soccer? He certainly never played that well for the Timbers when he was here.

4. Who would you rather have in goal? Ray Burse, Jordan James or Hollywood United’s keeper Javier Barragan?

5. Was that a great effort from Hollywood United or what?

6. Does the US Open Cup mean more to you than it does for the Timbers coach and players?

More Wednesday.

    6. the cup is important to me, and for 45 minutes it looked like the team felt the same way.

When did Matt Taylor learn how to play soccer? He certainly never played that well for the Timbers when he was here.

He probably just stopped caring and went out to have loads of fun. Now look what he’s done. Next thing you know, he’ll pull a Justin Braun on all of our asses.

Taylor didn’t so squat for us last year apart from a couple goals in an exhibition against Preston. Guy looked like Wayne Rooney last night.

    FUCK!

Everybody relax. We see this all the time. Former Timbers player comes to PGE and has the game of his life. It’s a one-off. They get here and get worked up to put one over on us because we cut them. Will he continue at this rate? Was he capable of performing at this level consistently through a grueling USL season last year. No, not even close.

But clearly we did not put much stock in the cup. We treated it as a good reserve match.
