Adin Brown Signed by Timbers
By: mao | January 18th, 2011
Adin Brown has signed with the Major League Soccer version of Portland Timbers, according to manager John Spencer today. The 32-year old back-up goalkeeper was injured for all of the 2010 USSF Division 2 season save a token appearance late in the year away to Baltimore where he injured himself while kicking the ball out of bounds within five minutes of his substitution. While the Timbers certainly need cover as goalkeeper in case of injury or disastrous performance on the part of presumed starter Troy Perkins, Brown is a risky choice. The former Ă…lesund keeper has featured less than seventy times in the past five years, due almost exclusively to injuries. But Portland seem to think his presence in the dressing room is a positive one and that he might be useful in developing the presumably soon-to-be-signed New Zealand U-20 international Jake Gleeson.

I see the Gk position being an open competition between Perkins and Brown. If that wasn’t the case I don’t see any reason for signing him this year and even bringing him in last year when they knew he was going to be injured most the season. Remember he is only 32
It might be a risky signing to some, but when healthy and on his game Brown is one of the best GK’s in the league. If I remember correctly he led the Revs to an MLS Cup with outstanding performances and is one of those Gk’s that will win games for you
He flourished in Norway and overshadowed Perkins while they were both overseas. I see this as one of those competitions in preseason that will be a battle.
Gleeson on the other hand, who I have seen a couple of times, has great potential. To be able to develop under Perkins and Brown will turn a lot of his raw ability into well tuned GK. I think the Portland fans have a lot to be excited about with the experience of Perkins and Brown and the young talent of Gleeson.
Go Timbers!!!

Your last point is the one that is the reason for signing Brown. I think Perkins is the clear starter and Brown is the clear back-up. He does give cover in case of injury or horrifying performance on the part of Perkins. But mostly I think he’s a mentor to Gleeson, who I think will be signed and play in the reserve league.
More specifically on Brown, he did get the Revs to the MLS Cup game, but that was in 2002. Pretty hard to argue that his form is the same as it was then. He’s only played in 69 games since 2004.

I always thought Brown was overlooked by US Nats in his early playing days. Brown always looked a better keeper than Perkins, but injuries could have had a significant effect on Brown’s quality. Based on his previous time in MLS and in Norway, I’d take Brown over Perkins…but like I said, I haven’t seen Brown play in a while.

Adin is an amazing goalkeeper i have personally trained with him and troy.Troy gets very sloppy and when he gets upset it all goes down hill.On the other hand when adin is down he keeps a positive attitude and does not give up. Adin will be a great addition to their team.
