Timbers Sign Kevin Goldthwaite
By: mao | August 25th, 2010
Portland Timbers today announced the signing of defender Kevin Goldthwaite for the rest of the USSF Division II season. The 27-year old defender was released by Red Bull New York in order for the club to sign Rafa Marquez earlier this month. A veteran of four MLS clubs and even a loan spell with the Timbers in 2005, Goldthewaite brings 87 games of MLS experience to Portland. Clearly this is a move that could have ramifications for the MLS version of the club, though the immediate focus will be playing out the rest of the Timbers’ final season in the second division.

I guess that’s a good place to start: Players with MLS experience.

We’ll see. I like the signing, but only if he actually plays for these Timbers. He did not feature last night and likely won’t in either of the next two games (our last two home games) either. Then it’s four games away with the playoffs on the line. I like the idea of it, but if he’s not going to get much more than just a cursory appearance, I’m not sure what the point is.

You could ask the same thing about most of our signings in Vancouver, but on the upside for us we have so many to look at over the next while. Our coach is even setting up exhibition games with local university teams to give them all game time and to get a look at them in competition. I think we’re taking the right approach though.
