Potland Timbers to sign Takayuki Suzuki?
By: Bob Kellett | March 25th, 2008
Ok, I don’t speak Japanese so I could be wrong about this, but from the looks of some Japanese soccer sites it would appear that Takayuki Suzuki is going to be signed by the Portland Timbers. Who the bloody hell is Takayuki Suzuki?
One possibility is that he is a dude who has played 55 games for Japan, scoring 11 goals. He has played for a number of J-League teams as well as for a couple of teams in Belgium and for Red Star Belgrade. I believe that he most recently was on trial with the San Jose Earthquakes. He is 31, so older than what we’ve been told, but that could be wrong. His goals are all over YouTube.
Another possibility is that he is the dude I have been calling Suki. This looks like the player that has been in the Timbers camp. These could be one and the same player or different players. They look different to me.
So perhaps we are getting two Asian players? Or just one? Anyone out there speak Japanese and can clear things up for us?
UPDATE: Looks like the Suki that has been in camp is indeed Takayuki Suzuki and that he was a Japanese international who played for Red Star Belgrade.

Hmm, the blog ate my comment. Here’s what I tried to post:
Sure looks like the same guy having beers in this picture with Timber Jim, Gregor, Tommy and Gavin on St Paddy’s Day: http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t279/Timberjim/StPatricksDay004.jpg
Found in the TimberJim Cam thread on SCUSA: http://www.soccercityusa.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1172115489/330#332

Hrm, I like what his Wikipedia page has to say:
Takayuki Suzuki is playing style is different compared to other forwards and strikers. He is well known for his defensive pressure on other defenders to force them to make mistakes. Many Japanese fans call his position as Defensive Forward (DFW) due to his lack of goal scoring/assists instinct, but instead he uses his defensive pressure and physical pressure.Scrappy forwards should do well in USL, eh?

[...] Blogging extraordinaire Bob Kellett makes a more logical guess as to who the unnamed striker is, Takayuki Suzuki. Suzuki’s age doesn’t fit the description but Kellett is certain it’s him, I [...]
