Steve Reese and Tom Taylor Listed on the Roster

By: Bob Kellett | April 21st, 2008

steve-reese.jpgWhat kind of introduction do you get if you are the third-string keeper or a midfielder who barely played a year ago, were released from your contract, and now are curiously back with the club? Apparently a silent introduction. I haven’t seen a press release announcing that Steve Reese and Tom Taylor as the 24th and 25th members of the 2008 Portland Timbers, but they are now officially listed on the roster. Reese is back for his second season as the Timbers’ emergency keeper. He first showed up around these parts in 2004 when he trained with the team after a stint in Romania. He basically is here to serve as a body in practice.

Tom Taylor was signed in 2007 from Halesowen Town in England. He appeared in five games for the Timbers last year and stood out for his utter ability not to stand out. You might recall that he is the son of Gavin Wilkinson’s agent so perhaps that explains why he has returned to Portland after being released from his contracttom-taylor.jpg earlier this year and after a trial with the Puerto Rico Islanders. Like Reese, I don’t expect him to see much action on a team that has no shortage of players at midfield. I actually am kind of disappointed about him coming back. If you are going to sign a practice squad player, why not sign a young local kid? There are a few floating around Portland who are capable of being on the bench for the Timbers. I’d rather have them get a shot than a guy who simply has connections with the manager.

If you haven’t seen it already, here’s Anne Ramzy’s Soccernet take on the USL First Division weekend that was, including a couple of thoughts about the Timbers.

I sure hope “Corporate Teammate” will score 10-15 goals this year.

On Bagley’s and Brown’s, Corporate Teammate is listed as Buffalo Wild Wings and Nike, respectively. No other player has something listed.

My Corporate Teammate is the Triple Nickel tavern. They support and understand me there. Buffalo Wild Wings is a sterile downtown sports bar. Blah.
