Timbers here, Timbers there, Timbers players from bloody everywhere

By: Bob Kellett | March 13th, 2008

Charming gap-toothed TriMet drunked up keeper commenter Finnegan might have sleuthed out the mysterious lanky Asian forward I saw playing with the first team during Wednesday’s training session. Keisuke Ota may or may not be on trial with our beloved Portland Timbers. For argument’s sake let’s say that he is the one they were calling “Suki”. Ota played 19 games for the Minnesota Thunder last season and scored two goals. Here’s his Wiki entry. Got to hate it when you injure your spleen.

Here’s some video of him pumping up the jam in Japan.

If the mysterious Suki is indeed Ota and if he somehow ends up playing for the Timbers during the 2008 season, he’ll be the first player the club has had from Japan. In fact, the club has never tapped into the Asian soccer market, but that doesn’t mean that players haven’t come from far and wide to play for the Timbers. Here is a list of players and their nationalities. This was done off the top of my head so undoubtedly I am missing some and since I wasn’t around for the NASL days I have left those players out. Your comments will help me fill in the blanks.

Canada – Jeff “Judas” Clarke, Justin Thompson
Colombia – Alejandro “Guti” Gutierrez*
El Salvador – Edwin Miranda*
England- David Hague, Tom Taylor, Sean McAuley*
Ireland – Keith Costigan
Ivory Coast – Arsene Oka
Kenya – Lawrence Olum
Kyrgyzstan – Vadim Tolstolutsky
Mars – Chugger Adair
Mexico – Jesus Ochoa, Byron Alvarez, Hugo*
New Zealand – Gavin Wilkinson, Cameron Knowles, Aaran F’in Lines, The unknown player signed for 2008
Northern Ireland – Michael O’Neill
Puerto Rico – Yuri Morales*
Scotland – Tony McPeak
Syria – Fadi Afash
Trinidad and Tobago – Brent Sancho, Darin Lewis
Zimbabwe – Mamba Chisoni
Easter Island – Scott Benedetti’s head

Weren’t the Bullen cousins from Queens? I also thought about Nsien but I believe he was born in the US in Topeka or Dayton or some such place. His father was Nigerian.
