New England Keeper Brad Knighton Loaned to Portland Timbers
By: Bob Kellett | July 2nd, 2008
Good-bye Ray Burse. Hello Brad Knighton. The New England Revolution have loaned Knighton to the Portland Timbers (why is a Seattle paper the first to report this?) for the rest of the season. Knighton played for UNC-Wilmington and the Indiana Invaders before signing with the Revolution in 2007. He has zero first-team appearances to his credit and hasn’t seen a whole lot of action with the reserve side either (he’s been backing up former Minnesota Thunder keeper Doug Warren). He’s obviously being loaned to the Timbers to get some playing time. He’s also being loaned because Gavin Wilkinson doesn’t have the confidence that Jordan James/Steve Reese are going to get the job done.
From his MLS combine report:
Big frame with a good presence in the goal. Can make big saves. His technique is solid and he has the ability to make it at the next level.
I have to trust Timbers keeper coach Jim Brazeau on this one. It seems like Knighton is a bit of a stretch, but Brazeau has a pretty good track record identifying USL-1 level keepers. If nothing else, this guy is buried far enough down on the Revs’ depth chart that he won’t be called back this season.

Any word on whether the Revs will also loan us some of the midfielders and forwards sitting on the reserve team bench to replace our current players?
The more loans the Timbers can make for guys that can’t crack another team’s reserve squad, the better.
We’re gonna win the league.

I can think of one guy we’ve had on loan who fits the above description…everybody loves him.
