Portland Timbers to Face Hollywood United in US Open Cup?
By: Bob Kellett | May 27th, 2008
The US Open Cup is never easy to understand and let’s just say that the folks running the show do a less than stellar job in the public relations department. According to the US Soccer handbook (PDF), the 2008 draw was supposed to be held today. Perhaps it has been already – I haven’t seen any listings anywhere – but I did come across this little blurb from a Columbus Crew blog.
But, I will be following here with continual game thoughts from what I hear from the RSL commentators who I must say are pretty good so far. They just had a nice little blurb about former Crew player and friend of Crewture Brian Dunseth and the fact that his amateur side Hollywood United drew the Portland Timbers in U.S. Open Cup qualifying. That should be interesting.

I haven’t been able to confirm this (my guess is that the draw was today and they will announce the pairings on Wednesday because Real Salt Lake and Columbus are playing tonight), but if it turns out to be true it sure is an interesting pairing. From Wikipedia:
Hollywood United Football Club was founded in the 1980s by a group of British expatriates who frequented the Cat & Fiddle, an English-style pub on Sunset Boulevard in the heart of Hollywood. Playing the “beautiful game” in the morning and enjoying a pint at the pub in the afternoon became the perfect way to spend Sundays in Southern California.
The ex-pats came to enhance their entertainment career in Hollywood. But whether their careers were in music, TV or movies, they all had one thing in common, an unyielding passion for the game. Word eventually spread throughout the entertainment world about the club and its players. Soon, not only other well-known stars, but also former national team soccer players from around the world asked to join.
Here’s the Hollywood United website. Good God, Alexi Lalas is listed on their roster! No wonder they are the World’s Glitziest Pub Team.
Regardless of whether they play Hollywood United or someone else, the Timbers’ first round game will be on Tuesday, June 10. I think. Soooo confusing.

An Alex Bengard sighting! I have wondered where he went. One of Bobby Howes’ big mistakes was benching him in the playoffs. And they have Jason Boyce. I remember him from MLS about 7,000 years ago.

Isn’t that Sex Pistol Steve Jones in the middle there? I’ve met him and talked footy with him and do believe this is his club.
