Six, Six, Six

By: Bob Kellett | August 18th, 2008

The Portland Timbers have six games remaining in their 2008 schedule. Six games between now and September 20. That doesn’t sound so bad, especially by USL-1 standards. Dig a little deeper and you’ll see that after Friday’s game in Vancouver they have two weeks off before hosting Miami on September 4. Good deal. And then the schedule goes to shit. In a stretch of one week Portland will play four games. Thursday in Portland, Saturday in Rochester, Monday in Montreal and Thursday in Portland. Not exactly the set up you’d like during the final playoffs push.

You have to shoot to score
Don’t look now but the Timbers have not been outshot by their opponent in three straight games. This wouldn’t normally be a massive feat, but considering how much the offense has struggled this season it is a very positive development. If nothing else the additions of Bryan Jordan and Byron Alvarez up front have led to increased scoring chances.

Solidarity
San Jose Earthquakes supporters are in favor of Portland 2011.

MP in the PM
There is a lengthy feature about Timbers owner Merritt Paulson in the August issue of Portland Monthly (sorry no online link). It doesn’t offer much new in terms of his MLS plans, but it is an encouraging piece and the target audience is the people who make the decisions in this town.

The Road Less Traveled
Former Timbers forward Matt Taylor explains how he went from playing for an amateur club to signing with a team in Germany.

I think the magic # is 38 pts.

We need 4 or 5 pts from 4 road games…..
    @ Vanc - L (house of horrors)
    @ Mont - D (I can’t see us taking all 9 pts from them)
@ Roch - D or L (1 pt. against a hot team would be nice)
@ Caro - W (hate to hold the road win until the last game, but seems fitting this year)

We NEED ALL 6 pts. at home…..
Miami - W (payback for the awfully officiated Memorial Day Game)
Charl - W (we outshot them 22-5, this time we need to close the deal)

I think we finish 9-9-12 (39) or a point lower. Which should be good for 7th position.

Then we win out and rule the world. (oi vey)
