The Preseason Numbers
By: Bob Kellett | April 13th, 2009
The Portland Timbers defeated the Seattle Sounders reserve team 3-2 on Monday, proving beyond a doubt that we don’t need to wait until 2011 to win the MLS Cup (Update: Recap and video). The victory means that the Timbers have 2 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss this preseason (1-1-1 against MLS clubs). With the regular season kicking off in less than two weeks, it is possible that this was the last preseason game. Or it is possible there may be more. Stay tuned to Twitter for updates.
At this point it might be constructive to take a macro look at how things have gone through 6 games. Below are some statistics I have compiled (always subject to mistakes caused by poor math skills). I’ll update the minutes played to include the Seattle game when/if that information is provided.

I predict without doubt that if at any point during the season we struggle to create offense with whatever combination of 4000 midfielders Gavin throws in that week, at 60 he will sub out the one middie that is actually playing with skill and creativity for Higgins. At that point, Higgins will then proceed to give away 14 or 15 straight possessions with his patented “giant first touch.”
But then again, I can hope not.
