Timbers Fall Flat against Rochester and Montreal
By: Bob Kellett | September 8th, 2008Two road games. Two more losses. Two more games in which this 2008 Portland Timbers team failed to find the goal and failed to resemble anything close to a side that deserves to be in the playoffs. Yes, they are still mathematically alive and I suppose they could pick up victories against Charleston and Carolina, but do you really want to see this team advance to certain elimination in the first round of the playoffs? Do you really want to see more of a team that looked so feeble for nearly the entire 180 minutes against Rochester and Montreal? Do you really want to see more of a manager that doesn’t have an ounce of creativity in his body send out the same group of guys that can’t make simple passes or mount anything close to a buildup in the attack? Do you really want to see more of the backline blunders and the non-existent midfield?
I sure don’t. I’ll be there on Thursday evening and I’ll cheer on the players, and then I’ll wish them well because this current group of players under this current coach sure shouldn’t be here next season. After watching them fail to score in 13 of 28 games, win just seven games, and play simply miserable soccer game after game, I think we’ve seen enough.
My apologies for lack of activity on the blog. I blame life. I’ll give you a refund once the Timbers give me back the 180 minutes I spent watching these games. Don’t expect much in the early part this week either. I’ll do my best….

Really hate to say it, but I agree.
Even if, a big if, we make the playoffs, I don’t see a win against Vancouver, PR, Rochester, or Montreal.

Doing a lot better than me, Bob. I was just overwhelmed with a new internship this summer and did not keep the Rochester blog updated, at all. Feel awful bout it but so it goes.
I was at the game this weekend (returned to Rochester for hurricane) and I caught your boys in the airport Sunday AM, actually. I was talking to one of them and I asked how their season was and one shook his head and said “not good, not good at all.”

So what if we suck? Thursday will be fun.

A bottom seed winning a home-away against the number two seed? I’ve seen stranger things happen.
To answer the questions, yes, I do want to see more. Why? Civic pride. (SL)

I would keep roughly half the squad: Thompson, Thompson, Knowles, Dunn, Griffin, Karalexis, Guante, Olum, Oka, Jordan (once we break Arena’s kneecaps and tear up BJ’s contract), and Totori. Mostly defenders… but that’s where I see the team’s strength. Other than that, keep the younger, faster, more creative outfield players and get a head coach/assistant coach/anyone on staff who knows how to use them and develop them.

Also we should sign someone like Theirry Henry or Kaká or Didier Drogba.

I have to throw Brown in there too as a player I’d like to see back…sure he is older, but I really like his play in the midfield…its not his fault there is no one to link up with there.

Watching the Timbers this season reminds me of that old hockey/soccer game we had as kids where the players slid up and down in one section of the pitch. You guys know what I am talking about?
Anyway - these players have been clearly instructed to “keep their shape” and that means sliding up in down in one section of the pitch and not going to far or using creativity.
