Timbers Grab Bag 06.03.08
By: Bob Kellett | June 3rd, 2008
Is he or isn’t he?
Miguel Guante was invited to play with Puerto Rico’s national team for their June 4 World Cup Qualifier against Honduras, but from what I can tell (and please correct me if my lousy Spanish skills are failing me here) he has decided not to participate. Considering the stretch of play ahead for the Timbers the next two weeks and the injuries to Lawrence Olum and Benjamin Totori, I’m glad Guante has apparently passed on the opportunity to represent Puerto Rico.

Like many of us, Soccernet and The Offside’s Anne Ramzy has some ideas as to why the Portland Timbers are struggling. She thinks Gavin might be tinkering too much with the lineup. She might just have a point.
PGE Park going solar
From the City of Portland’s Office of Finance and Management newsletter (PDF):
Next year PGE Park may join the ranks of the few stadiums that are a little greener. Energy-wise, that is. The Office of Management and Finance is working cooperatively with the Office of Sustainable Development (OSD) and the owner of the Portland Beavers and Timbers, Merritt Paulson, under the leadership of Mayor Tom Potter with the goal of testing the viability of solar energy in Portland. The plan is to install photo voltaic solar panels on the roof of PGE Park to collect and promote clean energy. This will be one of several city solar projects for which OSD will issue an RFP this summer. Implementation would be in 2009.
This a great step. Now if they truly want to make PGE Park green they’ll lay down some natural grass.
Saying all the right things
This is a couple weeks old but was just posted yesterday. Apparently Ray Burse stopped in Dallas on the way back to Portland after the Puerto Rico/Miami trip and this interview was one of his activities in Texas. This guy is racking up some serious airline miles this season.

Who is Justin Knowles?

You haven’t heard? Cameron Knowles and Justin Thompson have morphed into one player who is 450lbs and runs the 100-yard dash in 16 minutes. Tough as nails though.
Thanks for the correction. More errors coming your way soon….

I didn’t realize Brownie was that dominant in terms of shots. 32, and the next highest with 9? Yikes. All shall quiver in fear before our one-pronged attack.

Not really sure I agree with her on the tinkering with the lineup. Yes, there is some merit to keeping it constant, but really the only tinkering has come in the midfield. Back 4 have stayed the same and our two forwards haven’t varied much (save red card susp.). Dombrowski’s been in for Tommy, we’ve had Guante/Olum on the right, Higgins at left or center, with minor experiments with Little. But, Olum, Dombr, Tommy, Gregor, & Higgins all have over a year’s worth of experience together already (incl pract). What we’ve inserted in Guante & Little is perhaps a little more creativity & speed.

Actually, the player who seems to be missing in this equation, based on last year’s late in the game subs, is Lara. Seems to have dropped off the map.

Lara got some minutes vs Rochester, but before that he’s been mostly useless this season in his limited minutes. I’m a fan of the guy, and think he COULD be a big producer for us with starter’s minutes. Rather see Tommy in there though.
