Timbers Odds and Ends

By: Bob Kellett | July 13th, 2008

I hate to point this out
Total losses in 2007: 5
Losses through 17 games in 2008: 6

Tigres Tales
After losing to the Colorado Rapids in penalties on Wednesday, Tigres travelled to Sacramento where they’ll play another exhibition Sunday against Cruz Azul before heading to Portland for Tuesday’s tilt against the Timbers. That almost sounds like a USL-1 schedule.

How long was Gregor being shopped?
According to the Cary News, the Timbers and Rochester had been trying to put together a trade involving Andrew Gregor at least a week before it all went down, but it was Carolina that made it all happen.

The trade transpired quickly, Economides said. After not playing against Seattle on July 3, Walker approached Carolina coach Scott Schweitzer and Economides about his displeasure with his playing time. Economides knew Diallo was on the trading block, and he knew that Rochester and Portland had reached a stalemate in their work toward a trade. When the RailHawks dangled Walker, it all came together.

Checking in with some former Timbers
I watched the Charleston-Puerto Rico match on Saturday and Paul Conway was the color commentator. Nice to see he didn’t blow out a knee on the way to the broadcast booth. By the way, after Charleston plays the Timbers at home on Saturday the league-leading Battery will play 11 of their final 14 games away from Blackbaud Stadium. Also, how about Puerto Rico? Consecutive road wins against Montreal, Portland and Charleston. They’re the hottest team in the league right now.

Jake Sagare has 4 goals and 2 assists in 10 games for the Yakima Reds. He has a teammate, Ceveriano “Junior” Garcia-Palominos who has scored 11 goals in 14 games. With those numbers he should get a look from the Timbers next season, if not sooner.

Jaime Ambriz has no goals in 9 games for the Ventura County Fushion

Home sweet, er
USL Home Record through Saturday: 38-18-27
Timbers Home Record: 3-3-3
Timbers Home Record Since April: 0-3-3

How about the Odd End that Byron Alvarez is going to play for the Timbers vs Tigres? What’s the story here, do you think? I thought Byron was on Gavin’s persona non grata list; any chance do you think that El Matador could rejoin the team for the rest of the season? He’s only 29, still got the ability to get it done at this level (8 goals last year for Battery), and there’s a lot of love in this town for him.

    Thoughts?

I’m intrigued by a possible Suzuki-Alvarez partnership up top.
