Timbers Picked to Finish Second in USL-1
By: Bob Kellett | April 8th, 2008
Remember all those nice things that I said yesterday about Anne Ramzy and her efforts to publish stories about the USL First Division on ESPN’s Soccernet? I take them all back now that I see that she has picked the Seattle Sounders to finish above the Portland Timbers in the table. You can send your hate mail to…just kidding. Anne actually does a nice job breaking down the league and I agree with many of her assessments even if she didn’t get the memo that the Timbers are going to win the league even if we don’t know how and we don’t know when.
For the record, I see the league finishing this way in 2008:
USL First Division
.
1. Portland Timbers (by law I can’t pick against them even if I think they will finish lower)
2. Montreal Impact
3. Seattle Sounders
4. Vancouver Whitecaps
5. Rochester Rhinos
6. Charleston Battery
7. Miami FC
8. Puerto Rico Islanders
9. Atlanta Silverbacks
10. Minnesota Thunder
11. Carolina RailHawks
Let’s do our best to remember this post so that you can tell me how wrong I am once the table is set in September. Or you can tell me how wrong I am right this very moment by offering your predictions in the comments.

I am pathologically unable to disagree with you about the Timbers winning the league.
Not a prediction, but I would like to see Minnesota finish higher than the toilet this season. Sad to see an “old” USL club doing so poorly, their fans deserve better.

I’m not sure that the new-look Rhinos will finish quite that high, but we’ll see. I’ll bring my camera to the OSU match tomorrow (weather looks questionable, but hell, it’s Oregon) and hopefully get some shots for you.

Ian, you should come up to Portland on Friday for the final pre-season match. There is at least one big Tartan Army nerd you’ll be able to meet

I’m throwing caution to the wind and declaring Miami this season’s winner. But if Fabrice Noel winds up at any USL team, then that team will automatically win just because.

I’m of the belief that it’s bad karma/mojo/juju to pick the Timbers to finish first. Jinxes are not something to mess with, as whomever is picked to finish first will inevitably not be there at the end. So, well done Anne. I, too, pick Seattle to finish first and Portland second.

Ironically, The USL’s best team is Québécoise
Nick De Santis’ Montreal Impact are coming off a strong training camp in Portugal and Italy. They even managed to poach an ASRoma player Stefano Pisoli, and a young brazilian striker from Ayia Napa , Severino Jefferson.
I see them going all the way this year before heading to the MLS with the backing of Liverpool’s and habs owner George Gillet
ALlez L’impact ! On va aller bûcher du bois dans l’Ouest Américain!

How is that ironic?

Maybe he thinks USL means United States League?

When Montreal head to MLS, will they still give out free tickets?

I hope the Timbers will continue to dominate Montreal at their new stadium as much as they did at Robillard. The Timbers went there three times, never got scored on, and got two wins and a draw. We own ‘da house in Montreal.
I don’t think S**ttle will finish in first, I think it will be between Portland and Montreal for that top spot. I also think Rochester will struggle with their new coach and they just started camp last week and could very well miss the playoffs for the first time. I think they will battle with Carolina, Minnesota, and Miami for the final playoff berth (which is 7th place this year).
