Timbers to Face University of Portland on April 11
By: Bob Kellett | March 13th, 2008
This won’t come as much of a surprise to those of you who spend your workdays hitting the refresh button every 20 seconds on the Soccer City USA site. The Portland Timbers have officially announced that they will face the University of Portland at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex in a friendly on April 11. You’ll have to pony up $7 to see the show, which is exactly $7 more than you have had to pay to experience similar fun in previous seasons when Timbers/UP friendlies have gone unannounced. Whatever. If you are die hard you’ll still show up to get a glimpse of the season ahead and because it is always amusing to see the picture of Kasey Keller sporting a mullet hanging inside the Chiles Center. For those scoring at home, here is the unofficial preseason schedule as I understand it.
March 20 - vs. Vancouver Whitecaps, Tukwila, WA*
March 28 - vs. San Jose Earthquakes, Merlo Field, 7:30
March 30 - vs. Gonzaga, Pacific University, 2:00
April 5 - vs. UW (35 min half), Merlo 11:15*
- vs. Oregon State (35 min half), 12:30*
April 11 - vs. University of Portland, Merlo 7:00
All in all this isn’t a bad schedule, although if I had my druthers I’d have the team start off against the college kids and work their way up the food chain as training camp progresses. Since I am not a highly paid consultant to the team, at least not yet, I will applaud them for scheduling some decent competition and for doing some community outreach by playing at a venue like Pacific University.
Now if only they sold beer at UP. That communion wine just doesn’t do it for me….
* Games that have not been officially announced. That might have something to do with the fact that they are free.

Yup, 20 seconds is a good refresh delay on Soccer City USA; if you refresh in less than 5 seconds you get this error:
