We’re not Detroit
By: Bob Kellett | May 7th, 2009Scanning the Cleveland City Stars’ roster for familiar names and I don’t see many. There’s midfielder Gordon Kljestan, who played for Red Bull New York in 2008 and whose brother Sacha has played for the US national team. There’s defender Troy Roberts, who played a bunch of games for the LA Galaxy over the years. There’s also the not so delightfully named defender Stephen Cruickshank who last played for the delightfully named Ma Pau FC in Trinidad and Tobago. Perhaps you have heard of Max Cream of Irish First Division side Shelbourne FC fame. There’s also a bunch of players who played in college or in the USL Second Division last season. In fact, there’s only two players who was on a USL First Division roster last year including the Duck, Roland “Pato” Aguilera. Based on what I have seen from this league, throwing together a bunch of players who aren’t familiar with USL-1 soccer is not the road to success.
Familiar face, familiar stats
Arsene Oka showed up late to training last season and never really figured into the 2008 Portland Timbers scheme, featuring in seven games total. He headed for Cleveland during the offseason and is listed on the City Stars roster. He hasn’t appeared in a game yet this season.
Cleveland’s on the air
You can get the lowdown on all things City Stars from this radio podcast.
Plastic buckets!
That roster is coming together nicely
I suppose now that we have a PDL side we have to hate the Cascade Surge, especially number 99.

They look like they have the beginnings of a killer supporter’s group…hope they have a team to continue to support (with the way USL/US Soccer seems to go).
Hope some make a trip out to PDX for a game…

the monkey > sammy surge = FACT. I miss the monkey, fact.
I saw some talk about the City Stars supporters last season as they were making a run for the USL2 title, and I think it’s great that they came up.
Did I say I was predicting a 1-nil Timbers win on Saturday? Well, as the game approaches, and my hyperbole glands are getting activated, I want to revise that. 6-0, with a red card for Max CREEEEEAM in the 25th minute. And then the two TA who are at the match burn the city down, starting with the river. Boom.

I wonder: What percentage of the Cleveland economy actually is based on LeBron James?
