What a day for a game!

By: Bob Kellett | March 28th, 2008

snow-soccer.jpgI’ve watched the Timbers play in rain, in sleet, and in 100 degree temperatures, but I’ve never seen them play in the snow. I imagine it won’t be snowing tonight, but what a weird weather day it is out there. Doesn’t matter if I end up getting frostbite tonight. I’m still excited to go out to the Bluff and watch the 2008 Portland Timbers in action.

The Trib has the coverage today with a story about the defense and Scot Thompson, who is expecting a child in August. As is almost always the case, they also cram a ton of half-information into a tiny space including this tidbit.

Wilkinson promises that the Timbers aren’t done adding forwards and that they will announce a big-name player soon. The second addition will come “in about 20 days,” he says. “He’s a great young player, not experienced in this country, but has played in World Cups. … He’ll probably miss our first four or five games, but he’s a player worth waiting for.”

Now, do you suppose that he is talking about Takayuki Suzuki or is this another player with international experience? I kind of interpret this as being another player – possibly one that is playing somewhere else at the moment unlike Suzuki who has been training with the team for the past couple of weeks. I don’t see why Suzuki would have to miss the first four or five games, but perhaps you have an explanation.

Update: Suzuki officially announced. No mention of having to miss games. Does that mean another forward is coming our way in the coming weeks? Gah, I’m giddy.

Here’s my stab at a starting lineup tonight. Feel free to tell me how wrong I am:

Burse
Thompson Knowles Karalexis Higgins
Guante Gregor Poltl Ready
Brown Bagley

Ok, bundle up, get some drinks in you before you get to Merlo, and have fun tonight. See you there.

Our player budget must have seriously exploded if we are talking about TWO guys with World Cup experience?

No beer consessions at Merlo. Hip flask, people!

I am about to explode out of my cubicle in a burpo-fueled rage. I can’t believe I have to sit here another 5 hours before I leave.

“Burpo fuel” is an intriguing concept.
