US Open Cup Qualifier: Timbers 2 – Chivas 0
By: mao | March 29th, 2011
Two late goals saved Portland Timbers and earned their first-ever win under the MLS badge in a 2-0 victory over ten-man Chivas USA in a US Open Cup qualifier at Merlo Field. Jack Jewsbury stunned Chivas with a 30-yard strike in the 84th minute after Jake Gleeson made a wonderful sliding tackle to deny Justin Braun. In the 86th minute Eric Brunner scored from a Jewsbury corner, following up his own saved header by poking in the Timbers’ second. It took forty minutes to break down the resolute Chivas defense, even after the visitors lost defender Andrew Boyens to a second yellow card, but Portland finally got the offensive output it so desperately craved. The fact that Jewsbury and Brunner were the goal scorers lets Jorge Perlaza off the hook after he missed an open header late in the game but it is Gleeson who emerged as the star for Portland. Young Khalif Alhassan (pictured) also made a nice impact in his second appearance with the Timbers this year. The win propels the Timbers into the next round of the Open Cup’s qualifying scheme which will be away to San Jose Earthquakes. More to come tomorrow…
